Vita Craze

Keeping you Healthy

vitamins

While I try to keep a balanced diet as much as possible, there are some days where my sweet tooth gets the best of me. As noted before, I've always felt its fine to have a treat every now and then and to keep it in moderation, which is where my vitamins come into play. Since I already know there will be some days where I indulge a little bit, I keep my body balanced by taking vitamin supplements every day. Now if you eat a well balanced diet 24/7, you are probably getting all of the nutrients and minerals you need from food, but if not then listen up.

I've rounded up some of the best vitamins I believe a woman should be taking to keep a well balanced lifestyle. Now these are only suggestions, you may need different ones or only a few to add to your diet depending on what you already eat. Personally for me, I take vitamin D, vitamin B6, Fish Oil, and a prenatal which acts like a multi-vitamin.

  1. A good multi: If there is one vitamin you choose from this list, make it a multi vitamin specifically made for women. Make sure it had folate or folic acid, which is important for woman ages 18-40, who are looking to start a family. This gives you a dose of everything you need for the day.
  2. Fish Oil: Omega 3 has been getting a lot of hype recently and for good reason. Not only will this help your hair stay shiny, skin stay clean, and nails stay long, but it also helps the heart and blood system, helps lower cholesterol, helps with depression, and prevents painful periods.
  3. Biotin: The beauty vitamin. This little gem works miracles on hair, skin, and nails. Many multi-vitamins contain biotin though so be sure to check the label.
  4. Probiotic: This supplement is a great way to keep your digestion tract in check. Probiotics are living organisms that are considered to be "good bacteria" that help strengthen the immune system. Be sure to take this on an empty stomach.
  5. Iron: This works wonders by delivering oxygen from your lungs to the rest of the body. This supplement is good for women who are menstruating and losing blood every month. If you eat enough meat, 1 serving per day, or eat leafy greens like kale and spinach, then you most likely are getting the recommended daily dose of iron.
  6. Zinc: This mineral keeps our immune system strong and fights off disease. If you are pregnant, this is especially important to take since your little one will be using up most of what is in your body. Also, vegetarians who eat many legumes, which prevent the body from properly absorbing zinc.
  7. Vitamin D: One cool thing about vitamin D is that our bodies produce it naturally when exposed to sunlight. The only problem is if you live somewhere that is perpetually cloudy or has long winters, then you may not be getting the right amount. This vitamin regulates the absorption of calcium and phosphorus in your bones and keeps cells functioning properly.
  8. Calcium-Magnesium: Calcium strengthens your bones, muscles, and teeth. When combined with magnesium, it allows vitamins to better absorb into the system. Like with a probiotic, this needs to be taken on an empty stomach and not combined when taking your other supplements since it can interfere with the absorption of other nutrients.

Peddlers Village

One thing my dad and I love to do is take little weekend trips. On a recent adventure, we traveled down to Peddlers Village near Philadelphia for a day filled with sunshine, shopping, and fun. This quaint  little village of shops really delights with beautiful scenery throughout, great restaurants, and little knick knack stores filled with treasures. Did I mention there is a cheese shop and a winery there? Well, indeed there is, plus a bakery, ice cream shop, two famous restaurants, coffee shops, a Bavarian nut shop, and so much more. I love to just walk around and take in all of the landscaping done throughout the village. Incredibly beautiful to wander around. I always get some seasonal items for the up coming holidays to decorate my home with and never leave without visiting the Pendleton store across the street. That my friends is some quality shopping right there.

One thing about Fall fashion that never fails is the darkening of the colors. There is good reason for this, but why not lighten up a bit? I love pastel colors year round and how they brighten the sea of dark fabrics. I truly fell in love with this outfit and how it stands out from the crowd. I would describe my style as romantic, feminine, and vintage. This certainly feels very romantic and feminine to me with the creamy white chiffon skirt and the mint green sweater. The cuteness of the deer print makes me smile. I matched the fawn heels with the image of the deer. The shoes blend in with the lightness of the coloring. I wanted to keep an airy feeling about the outfit and went with an taupe envelope quilted clutch with bow detailing.

The Golden Season

Autumn 2014

Autumn is a second Spring when every leaf is a flower.
fall

Fall is at it's beautiful peak here in the North Eastern part of Pennsylvania. I wanted to share some photos I've taken over the past 2 weeks. If only the colors would last longer than they do, but then I suppose it wouldn't be as magical if they were to last. There's something about the fleetingness that makes it all the more spectacular.

Fall Floral and Dapper Dan

Simple Sophistication

After women, flowers are the most lovely thing God has given the world.
— Christian Dior
fall floral

I never tire of floral prints throughout the entire year. I love any kind of girly detail and this outfit symbolizes just that. I'm carrying my new purse with the bow detail and this LC Lauren Conrad dress from two years ago. Shopping my own closet lets me re-wear some of my old favorites with new accessories such as the purse, jewelry, or shoes. Speaking of, the shoes, from Modcloth, have a very retro feel to them with their velvet texture and cute little kitten heel.

I shot these photos up at Cinemark theaters before Justin and I saw a movie. The gorgeous weather and beautiful sunset, along with the colorful leaves, gave such a lovely glow that made it feel amazing to be alive. There was a pleasant little breeze as well that lent a nice movement to my hair and dress.

I had to get a photo of Justin and I with the pretty leaves behind us. Let's also take a look at his outfit, which I think is a nice date night outfit for any casual guy. Dark denim jeans, a button down, and brown shoes. Simple and well put together.

Ready, Set, Relax

Easy Breezy Chiffon

Oh the golden days of Fall. I look forward to these days all year long and cherish every second of them that I possibly can. A slight chill in the air, yet still warm enough in the afternoons to not wear a jacket. When I want to feel relaxed while working around the house an outfit I like to wear is a chiffon top, leggins, and embellished flats, these being sparkle. Its an easy breezy type of outfit that simply has no fuss to it. This is a great look for still looking chic while doing chores and what not. You'll see me in this until the weather truly turns on the frightful side, but until then, when I want to feel relaxed, this is a go to. If you are not one to wear leggings, then I would wear jeans. Normally, jeans would be my choice, but I like to break up the monotonous pattern of wearing jeans constantly. Variety is the spice of life as they say.

Chocolate Scotcheroos

A Delectable Dessert

chocolate scotcheroos

If you're looking for a yummy dessert to serve, look no further. Chocolate Scotcheroos were made at many family functions over the years; mainly by my aunt Arlene and grandma. These decadent treats please the taste buds with creamy peanut butter and a topping of butterscotch and chocolate morsels. My mouth waters just thinking about them! When I asked Justin what he wanted for our anniversary he said scotcheroos. Always a crowd pleaser and quite simple to make, these little bars should be a staple in everyone's recipe book.

Fall Coat Guide 2014

Why don't you get out of that wet coat and into a dry martini?

This is the garment that has kept the original function of clothes—to keep you warm. Coats can either be fitted or loose, whichever is your personal choice. But above everything they must be practical. Practical in color and practical in style.

An absolute favorite of mine, the Pendleton '49er jacket. This jacket truly never goes out of style with its retro-chic plaid pattern and roomy patch pockets. Made of 100% virgin wool.

Another staple I keep seeing is the military look. While that's not necessarily my style, I can't deny my love for this coat in an olive brown shade. The length and tie accentuate my figure while keeping me warm.

fall coats

The famous trench coat. A classic style that will be forever chic. All I need is a fedora and Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman in Casablanca come to mind. Well here's looking at a beautiful coat for Fall.

fall coats

While pink was the essential color for coats last year, this year I'm forecasting that light blue will be it. What's not to love from this Pendleton design? Made from merino wool, this lightweight jacket has the perfect pop of color to keep you feeling fresh.

For all of you lovelies that live in a warmer climate this light weight lace bomber jacket is for you. Add some feminine flair to your style while keeping the chill off of your skin. The delicate blush color fits right in with my taste of keeping some pastel colors alive in the Fall.

nautical for fall

Last but not least, the outfit I wore during this photo shoot. A nautical sweater from Banana Republic. Skinny dark wash jeans from LC Lauren Conrad. Lastly, candy apple red pointed toe flats from Modcloth. Just because the weather is changing does not mean my nautical flair must as well. Simply update the look with heavier fabrics and richer materials.

Lace and Leopard Oh My

Day to Night with Simple Swaps

day to night blazer

As noted before, my love for leopard prints only intensifies once the fall and winter months start to approach. This outfit comprises of simple, classic, and timeless pieces that when put together look effortless. The base is a lovely cream sweater and leopard print skirt. For daytime I chose a lace bomber jacket and flats for running around town doing errands. Once night approaches, swap out the lace bomber for a black blazer and heels. I stuck with leopard heels and really fancied this hi-low blazer (higher cut in the back, longer in the front) since it balances out my petite frame. The jewelry, a tortoise shell watch, long diamond pendant, and crystal stone earrings stayed the same for both outfits. It just goes to show how a simple swap, here being the jacket and shoes, updates a classic outfit from day to night.

Moody Eyes

Fun for Fall

eyes and lips

Happy Friday everyone! I thought it would be fun to try something new for a change. I wear the same eye makeup all the time. A shell base all over the lid, brown in the crease, liquid black eye liner winged out at the corner, and two coats of brown/black mascara. It's my signature look and if something works for you then stick with it. Every now and then I get the urge to change it up a bit though and the perfect place to try new makeup is the eyes. I really liked this look, especially the light wash for a daytime look. To compliment the eyes, pair a neutral pink lipstick.

morning tea
  1. Apply a gunmetal shadow to your lid, this will make the products we put on later pop that much more.
  2. With a fluffy brush, apply a tangerine color to your crease.
  3. Using that same fluffy brush, apply a charcoal brown shadow into the crease.
  4. Take a flat stiff brush and apply a silver pigment all over your lid.
  5. Take a smaller blending brush and a matte black shadow and apply this on your outer lid and into the crease just a touch.
  6. Taking whatever is left over on that blending brush, run this on your lower lash line, tapering in as we go.
  7. Apply a glitter-y gold shadow (wet it first) to the inner third of your lower lash line. This color is going to play off of the silver really well because it is not too warm of a gold.
  8. Apply a shimmering light gold shadow on the inner corner, but you can totally use a matte color. This is going to attention to your eyes.
  9. Apply a mechanical black gel pencil on your lower lash line.
  10. Apply black mascara and you are good to go!

I decided to go very light with all of the colors since it was day, but for nighttime, see more below!

Moody Eyes Nighttime Look

For the nighttime look, follow the same steps as above, but use more pigment instead of a lighter wash. I also added a black shadow eye liner right before the mascara to deepen and intensify the look. Again, I stayed with a neutral pink lip, nothing too harsh since the eyes are the main focus here. My eyes seem to get lost in pictures if I do not have some kind of eye liner on so I felt a little more comfortable with this addition to the look. Have you tried any new beauty looks lately? Remember, it's only makeup so it will wash off at the end of the day. Try something new if only for one day. Have fun!

Good Reads

Fall 2014 Edition

fall reading

There's nothing like curling up with a good book once the weather starts to cool. I always seem to gravitate towards mystery novels once Autumn hits and maybe that's due to the mystery that starts to fill the air with the days getting shorter, nights getting longer, and Halloween right around the corner. I love to snuggle under a blanket with a nice cup of tea and loose myself into an imaginary world. Without further ado, here is my Fall 2014 reading list.

  1. Girl Three by Tracy March. This was recommended to me by my relative and with good reason. It's a murder mystery set in Washington D.C. with political agendas, romance, betrayal, and the unraveling of secrets. Seems like a page turner to me and one that I cannot wait to read. The author wrote the book in a condo that was owned by my relatives and one that I had to pleasure of actually staying in. Pretty cool if you ask me.

  2. The Night Circus by Eric Morgenstern. A spell casting novel about a circus that magically appears out of thin air and brings with it all of the excitement and unique experiences a circus can offer. Behind the scenes, within the circus, a competition of imagination and will is going on, one that could destroy the circus, performers, and patron alike.

  3. How to Be Parisian Wherever You Are by Anne Berest, Audrey Diwan, Caroline de Maigret, Sophie Mas. A how to book by four French women on everything from how they dress, entertain, have fun, and attempt to behave themselves. I don't know about you, but anything Parisian gets my vote!

  4. The Devil in the White City: A Saga of Magic and Murder at the Fair that Changed America by Erik Larson. A true story of how the Chicago Worlds Fair came to be and all that went on around it. An intertwining story of a serial murderer who used the 1893 fair to lure his victims to their death.

  5. Station Eleven by Emily St. Jon Mandel. A spellbinding story about a group of nomad actors, a Hollywood star and his soon to be savior, set in the eerie days of civilizations collapse, roaming the scattered outposts of the Great Lakes region, risking everything for art and humanity.

  6. The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt. The story of a New York boy who survives a car accident that kills his mother. Tormented by her death, he clings to a painting that reminds him of her, and one that ultimately draws him into the underworld of art. As an adult, he owns an antique store, finds himself to be alienated and in love, and at the center of a dangerous circle.

All You Need is Love

Our 3rd Wedding Anniversary

3rd wedding anniversary
Love is the emblem of eternity, it confounds all notion of time, effaces all memory of a beginning, all fear of an end
— Germaine De Stael

When I awoke on the morning of our anniversary, I was greeted by a lovely bag on our dinning room table. Now, the 3rd anniversaries symbol is leather and Justin did quite good if you ask me. His gift to me was two leather handbags wrapped in the cutest polka dot paper with a card nestled on top.

3rd wedding anniverasary

I'm quite in love with these purses because of the great detailing they have. I'm a sucker for a structured top handle bag and the little gold bow accent gives the purse the perfect finishing touch.

When Justin arrived home he gave me these beautiful roses and told me the meaning he thought of behind the three colors. Going from white, to pink, and finally red, the colors represent the deepening of our love over the years. How romantic! I was also surprised by the little snack he got for me. Cinnamon sugar covered almonds. An absolute favorite of mine to snack on.

I really could not have asked for a better anniversary. Between our time in the Finger Lakes to our little celebration at home, everything was perfect and I feel completely lucky to have someone so special and loving as my husband.

Italian Wedding Soup

italian wedding soup

Since both my parents and I share wedding anniversaries so close to one another, theirs is September 22nd and mine September 24th, I decided to make Italian Wedding Soup in honor of the celebrations. This was also the soup served at our reception dinner. A favorite with everyone and sure to be a smash at your next dinner, here is the classic recipe. Bon appetit!

homemade italian meat balls

Ingredients:

  • 1 large egg

  • 1 lb lean ground beef

  • 1/4 cup chopped Italian parsley

  • 1/2 cup Italian seasoned bread crumbs

  • 2 tbsp olive oil

  • 1 pkg mirepoix

  • 2 cartons chicken stock

  • 1/3 fresh chopped escarole

  • 1/2 cup acini di pepe pasta

  • Salt and pepper to taste

  • Parmesan Cheese

Directions:

  1. Beat egg slightly in medium bowl; add ground beef, parsley, and bread crumbs. Mix well with clean hands. I also added some cheese into the mix. Form into small meatballs, using about 1tsp ground beef mixture for each.
  2. Brown meatballs on all sides in olive oil in a pan on medium, about 5 min. Remove meatballs; drain off all but 1 tbsp pan drippings.
  3. Add mirepoix; reduce heat to medium-low. Cover; cook, stirring occasionally, 6-8 min, until veggies are soft, but not browned.
  4. Add meatballs and stock; bring to a boil on high. Lower heat to medium and simmer for 5 min. Ass escarole; return to simmer on medium-high. Add pasta; let simmer about 5 min until pasta is tender.
  5. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Garnish each serving with grated cheese.

Dance, Dance

Do one thing everyday that makes you smile

Dance like no one is watching; sing like no one is listening; work like you don’t need the money; and love like you’ve never been hurt.
dance

Dancing always brings a smile to my face. The feeling of moving to a song I love simply makes me laugh with happiness. The rush of endorphins from jumping, twirling, side stepping (like a mini exercise routine) also adds to my overall happiness at the end of the song. My challenge to you is to do one thing everyday that makes you happy. You'll thank me for it later on. Anything from being outdoors, exercising, sleeping more, hiking, dancing, singing, watching a movie, reading a book, taking a photograph, whatever you heart desires, will have a positive outcome on your daily life. Studies show that when we do an activity we enjoy, it produces an overall effect of positive and enjoyable experiences for us elsewhere in our lives as in the workplace. Why not take some time then to make ourselves happy?

A Feather in Your Cap

Hat's Off to You

viintage fall outfit

If there's one thing I love it's vintage, especially a good vintage hat. As you've seen with Summer, I had some various hats to choose from. Now that Fall has arrived, it's time to switch from straw to velvet, and let's take a moment to look at that fantastic feather! This dress from Modcloth has an amazing beaded bib neckline, quite glamorous, and the prettiest shade of green to compliment the Fall and Winter months. The sparkly purple shoes from DSW keep the glamor going; a great color to pair with green, wine, yellow, and orange. The vintage clutch also has some exquisite bead work on it with a pattern reminding me of a peacock. The egg shaped bracelet I'm wearing is a replica of Jackie Kennedy's. The colors on it remind me so much of Fall. I must say, this outfit made me feel as if I were in the 1940s and I loved every single moment of it.

Hues of Harvest

Color Course

hues of harvest

I've been snuggling up in some cozy sweaters lately and this cropped one fits perfectly into the new season. It should be mentioned that it tucks quite nicely into any skirt. No extra fabric to bunch up and look messy. The wine colored faux leather skirt adds some nice texture to any outfit and brings a sense of fun and youthfulness. As mentioned before, the leopard shoes blend in perfectly to match the color pallet of cream, wine, pink, red, and mustard yellow. The idea here is to add some texture and color into your Fall wardrobe. I love a simple black dress or outfit, but try to incorporate other rich colors once the weather turns cooler.  The shoes, skirt, and sweater are from LC Lauren Conrad.

This purse, from Carolton's in Rehoboth Beach, is the quint essential Fall hand bag. Perfect with its mustard yellow color, brown and black trim, and medium size so as not to over whelm, but big enough to carry necessary items in.

3 Year Wedding Anniversary to the Finger Lakes

Today marks my three year wedding anniversary and what better way to celebrate than by looking back at some wonderful memories from our trip to the finger lakes a couple weeks ago. Justin and I decided to take our anniversary trip a little early this year and it turned out to be spectacular. The finger lakes have beautiful sweeping landscapes to gaze upon, which comprises of what Justin and I do while visiting. We love to simply drive around and relax while taking in all of the scenery around us. Of course we do visit our favorite winery Bully Hill and stock up on Ravot 51, our favorite wine that has pineapples in it and quite a sweet flavor. Other than that we love to have little picnics around the lakes, do some antique shopping, and try the local cuisine. The golden rod was flourishing and added an Autumn feel to the gorgeous views. Let's not forget the fabulous waterfalls the finger lake region has to offer as well. This year we got to see a new one for us, Ithaca Falls, pictured last. Also, you'll see I made a new little friend while having our picnic. All in all we had a wonderful time with so many memories filled with love. I feel so luck to be married to my best friend.

A quick little history for us, Justin and I took our "mini moon" to the finger lakes the weekend after we were married. I had started a new job and was not able to take any time off. We still wanted to go somewhere to celebrate so we chose a small weekend trip to the finger lakes. We eventually took our big honeymoon trip six months later to Florida, but have always had a special place in our hearts for this New York region. We also took our one year anniversary to the finger lakes and now our three year as well.

Pointelle Polish

Lovely Leopard

pointelle polish

As the crisp cooler air arrives its imperative to start dressing appropriately. Fall usually has some cooler days mixed in with some warmed ones. To keep warm and cool try picking out an outfit that is made from pointelle fabric. Its a little heavier to provide some warmth, but also the open stitching allows for air flow. Another Fall must and one of my favorites, leopard anything. This luxurious neutral animal print pairs well with so many various color combinations and looks lovely to boot. The dress and pointed flats are from LC Lauren Conrad, the clutch from Target, pearl necklace and earrings from my mom.

Alternatively, for a different look with the same dress, keep your hair down in waves, add leopard heels instead of flats, and trade out the pearls for some diamonds. A new look with some simple swaps of accessories.
